Dr. Tyler Ley, a professor and the Gilbert, Cooper, W&W Steel Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIVE), was selected to receive the Clyde E. Kesler Education Award from the American Concrete Institute (ACI).
ACI is a leading global authority for its standards, technical resources and educational, training and certification programs in concrete.
The annual award is given to educators in the field of concrete materials and structures. All ACI awards are selected by the Board of Direction on the recommendation of an Awards Committee.
The ACI Board of Direction selected Ley “in recognition of his enthusiastic commitment to concrete materials education, his innovative use of social media and online teaching tools and his outstanding concrete YouTube video collection that has attracted more than six million views.”
With over 85,000 subscribers, Ley’s YouTube channel is a representation of his passion for teaching others about concrete. He has videos uploaded that target beginners, students and people in the industry. His most viewed video focuses on The Citicorp Center repair and has over one million views.
“I am so grateful to be recognized by ACI with this award, said Ley.” “My YouTube channel is a creative outlet that has helped me spread my teaching and research to a wide audience. I am so glad that others enjoy these videos and find them useful.”
Clyde E. Kesler was the past president and associate head of civil engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The university dedicated the award to Kesler as a way to honor his friendship, leadership and impact on the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Ley’s recognition is not only a personal accomplishment but a great representation of CIVE.
“The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering takes pride in our achievements in education and teaching, and it’s great to see those recognized by an international organization with the stature of the American Concrete Institute,” said Dr. Norb Delatte, head of CIVE. “This adds to Tyler’s impressive portfolio of awards for his teaching excellence.”
The award will be announced during the ACI Fall 2022 Concrete Convention, which will take place at the Hyatt Regency Dallas, in Dallas, Texas, from October 23-27, 2022.
