Northern overcame some adversity in their 3-0 win at Redlands College on Sunday.
First, Coach DuRoy was sick and missed the first half of action, and Northern's starting goalkeeper, Vanessa Markl, went down with an injury in the first half. Neither of which made much of a difference as the Mavs scored midway through the first half, and only allowed one shot on goal the whole game, which occurred during Markl's stint in goal. Northern's leading scorer Jazmine Furra started the scoring for the Mavs midway through the first half. Mia Yerian had the assist. Despite dominating possession as they so often do that would be the only goal of the half for the Mavs thanks to Redland's goalkeeper registering six saves, and a bunkering Cougars defense.
Northern started fast in the second half with an early goal by Chloe Wilkins off an assist by Sam Mendez. Josie Jarvis continued to add to her school record for goals scored by a defender with her tenth goal of the season on a corner from Mia Yerian to finish the scoring for the Mavericks.
"Coach Zepeda did a great job leading the team through the warmup and the first half," said coach Michael DuRoy. "That isn't easy to do on short notice. Not much phases these girls. They just keep playing. I was able to join the team at halftime, but the work had basically been done with the first half goal. Our midfield didn't allow Redlands too many opportunities to cross midfield. Gabriela Gonzalez played an amazing game. She was all over the field."
