Kay County Sheriff's Office Assisted in Traffic Stop in Newkirk

On 12/3/2022,  at approx. 9:30pm, The Kay County Sheriff's Office received a request for assistance from The Newkirk Police Dept. NPD made a traffic stop which led to information regarding criminal activity in Newkirk.  This activity included a quantity of drugs and at least one handgun. NPD requested assistance from the DA Drug Task Force as well. Deputy Garcia and NPD Officer Ryan were able to make another traffic stop related to this information.  Both the driver and passenger were from Kansas.

During the traffic stop, Deputy García detected an odor of marijuana.  A probable cause search of the vehicle was done.  During the search of the vehicle a handgun magazine was found in the driver's door. Found under the driver seat was a disassembled semiautomatic handgun.  A thorough search of the vehicle was conducted and resulted in the following being removed from Newkirk streets: 

 1 – 9 mm handgun

40 grams of marijuana

10 grams of cocaine

172 grams of methamphetamine

204 fentanyl pills

(amounts are approximate)

Both subjects were arrested and delivered to Kay County Detention Center where they were booked for multiple narcotics and firearm charges.NPD Chief Kevin Main prepared a search warrant for a residence related to the driver and passenger of the vehicle.
